Radiology & X-Ray

RadiologyThe Radiology Department is a technology-driven service – including one of the state's most advanced CT scanners – new and expanded facilities are planned for mid 2009, which will provide for a comfortable reception area, roomy exam areas and efficient office and work space. The space also includes a new computerized tomography (CT), MRI, nuclear medicine, ulstrasound, Radiology/Tomography Room, Radiology/Fluoroscopy Room and Special Procedures Room. In addition, Radiology currently operates equipment in the Emergency Department.

The Radiology Departments on the two campuses are connected by the hospital’s network backbone. The network provides for transmission not only of computer files but also of diagnostic images that span the entire range of Radiology capability from typical digitized X-rays to MRI and ultrasound images. This is facilitated by the Radiology Department’s Picture Archival Communications System and Computerized Radiology. This two-pronged solution for the digitizing, manipulation and storage of diagnostic images enables their viewing by physicians and clinical staff with password access at dozens of workstations at clinical locations in Benefis facilities and in the offices of physicians connected to the system.

MRIA component of the PACS modernization, the Archive can store five years’ worth of all categories of Radiology Department images in a three-foot by three-foot square device. In the past, a five-year archive would have amounted some 17,000 pounds of film requiring large amounts of storage space.

At Benefis, Radiologists and Radiologic Technologists have access to an arsenal of state-of-the-art diagnostic gear:

  • CT – One of Montana’s fastest and most technologically advanced 64-slice CT scanners, the Sonaton Sensation 64 has been the centerpiece of CT scanning at Benefis.  Our CTs are enhanced by a central control room. The CT Technologist has the ability to observe two rooms from the control room.
  • Nuclear Medicine – Two dual-head ADAC Cameras and a single-head ADAC Camera.
  • Ultrasound – Four Acuson Sequoia scanners. Three dedicated ultrasound scanning rooms; ultrasound units also can be transported to nursing units, Surgery or wherever needed. Units then return to the scanning room and plug into the network to transmit ultrasound studies to PACS.
  • MRI Suite – State-of-the-art General Electric short-bore Magnetic Resonance Imaging unit on each campus
  • Special Imaging – Two fully digital special-procedures rooms, utilizing a Siemens Multistar units.
