Daisy Winner Sheldon Fladland 'Truly Embodies the Benefis Mission'
Sheldon Fladland, RN, was a nurse on the medical floor for three years and recently stepped into an operations specialist role. The care he provides to his patients — and all patients on the unit — mirrors the care and compassion he has for his colleagues.
Sheldon is our third Daisy Award winner of 2024.
Medical Unit Manager Harly Lee wrote in her nomination letter that Sheldon "truly embodies the Benefis mission, 'We provide excellent care for all, healing body, mind, and spirit.'" But she noted he extends that care to the entire unit, patients and staff. She went on to say the following about Sheldon:
Sheldon is the type of nurse who will help in any situation no matter what is already on his plate. He steps into difficult patient situations without having to be prompted. He uses his knowledge, background, and resources to help give patients the best care.
Sheldon has been a staple on our unit with orientating new staff. Sheldon has taken part in the orientation of more than six new employees within the last three months. He has done this graciously and without complaints. His orientees have praised Sheldon for the time and attention he provides. They also acknowledge that Sheldon never once made them feel inferior or less than. Sheldon treats his co-workers with respect and kindness no matter how many weeks or years they have been on the floor.
Sheldon has taken a leading role in helping create positive changes on the medical floor. He brings forward issues in a tactful, professional manner that allows for positive conversations. He allows his co-workers to have an active role in decisions. Sheldon’s attention to detail has led to positive changes around patient safety on the Medical Unit, creating a safer, more productive environment.
Sheldon played an active role in the Epic launch this past March as the super user on the floor. Through all the obstacles, Sheldon was able to stay calm and de-escalate staff members. His actions helped nursing grow comfortable with the new EMR system and for patients to get safe, accurate care. Sheldon continues to help on the Epic front to this day, bringing forward areas of improvement and continuing to help educate his co-workers.
Sheldon was truly surprised at the award presentation, which was attended by family, friends, and colleagues.
Sheldon was also recognized for his role in navigating some recent patient cases that triggered safety concerns within his unit for both the patients and staff. Harly went on to say:
"Sheldon advocates with respect, integrity, and professionalism when speaking his mind, with evidence to back what he says. Sheldon is an immense asset to the medical team for not only the patients he helps care for but also to his co-workers."
