Introduction
Dr. Treena Sturgeon is an internal medicine physician, associate program director of the Benefis Internal Medicine Residency Program, and associate chief medical officer focusing on outpatient care.
Dr. Sturgeon’s role with the Internal Medicine Residency Program is to supervise internal medicine residents as they treat patients in an outpatient, primary care setting. She comes to the position having had experience teaching and supervising internal medicine residents and managing a primary care program in her hometown of St. Louis, Missouri.
“Watching residents grow into excellent physicians, that’s one of the greatest parts of the job,” she says.
Dr. Sturgeon was drawn to a career in medicine at an early age; in fact, she can’t remember ever wanting to do anything else. The combination of science and human relationships is Dr. Sturgeon’s favorite part of working in the medical field. She began her career as an intensive care unit nurse and had her eye on that specialty during medical school, but “fell in love” with primary care during her own internal medicine residency.
Dr. Sturgeon truly enjoys getting to know her patients, hearing their stories, and working to provide patient-centered care that fits into their lives.
“Let’s meet people where they are and find out what they want,” she says. “Let’s move forward with a patient’s care knowing what is important to them.”
In her free time, Dr. Sturgeon enjoys hiking and traveling (especially together). She is looking forward to the change of scenery Montana will provide and the opportunity to try new outdoor activities. Dr. Sturgeon is also passionate about doing medical volunteer work outside the United States.
