How Occupational Therapy Makes a Difference
An occupational therapist may help you:
- Discover new ways of dressing or grooming if paralysis caused by a stroke makes these activities difficult.
- Obtain and use adaptive equipment if arthritis makes it painful do activities such as opening a jar, for instance.
- Select toys that will help your child reach developmental milestones.
- Teach you how to use special equipment such as leg braces or wheelchairs if you have ongoing mobility challenges.
- Show you new ways of doing activities at work that have caused repetitive motion injuries.
- Evaluate your workspace and speak with your employer about making changes to your work schedule or environment that will make it easier to function on the job.
- Assess an older relative’s ability to drive a car – or help the person adjust to using other modes of transportation.
