Nurse Residency Program

Benefis’ Nurse Residency Program supplies new graduate nurses with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality patient care. We provide a unit-based orientation that will help transition first-year nurses to advanced-beginner nurses.

The program occurs three times a year during spring, summer, and fall. New nurses are assigned to a specific cohort depending on when they are hired. The program consists of classes that take place throughout the first year and includes of a mixture of lectures, hands-on skills, evidence-based content, and interactive activities.

Topics include:

  • Cardiac care
  • Communication
  • Conflict management
  • Death and dying
  • Documentation
  • Orthopedic / neuro assessments
  • Pain management
  • Pharmacy and high-risk drugs
  • Pre- and post-procedure care
  • Professional growth and planning
  • Mock codes
  • Rapid response change in patient status
  • Respiratory treatments
  • Self-care and stress management
  • Skill labs

Our Nurse Residency Program will help foster socialization through peer experiences and professional collaboration and facilitate development through simulations, group discussions, and scenarios.

Throughout the program, nurse educators round to offer feedback, coaching, and reinforcement. Benefis Nurse Residency Program participants enhance patient safety through increased knowledge and skill practice.
